As topic says.. have anyone had to deal with this lately and how did you go?
any tips or advice?

To apply for a Vehicle Import Approval under the Pre-1989 Scheme, you should provide to the Department:

A completed IO2—general application form. Ensure you include the year, make, model and vehicle identification number.
A $50 application fee. Payment options are set out in the application form (credit card, cheque or money order are accepted).
Picture ID of the importer or of responsible officer, if a company is applying. If you have imported in the previous 12 months you will not need to provide your ID again.
Purchase document (invoice or receipt).
Details which help us to assess the vehicle, including:
Details of the pre-1989 vehicle—such as the manufacturer's specifications, brochures, diagrams and photographs of the vehicle.
Registration papers where these are available (registration papers are an accurate source to verify the make, model and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the vehicle).
The specification of the vehicle you are importing (especially the installed engine, transmission and overall dimensions).
A recent photo of the vehicle (in its current condition).
A detailed list of all modifications undertaken on the vehicle. Please see below for a comprehensive list of modifications for cars, motorbikes and trailers.
Cars

Please advise if the car has had any modifications from the manufacturer's specification and if so please list the modifications.
If there are no modifications, make a statement to that effect.
Please advise the body style of the car (e.g. 2-door convertible).
Please advise if the body of the car has been customised.
If it is not customised, make a statement to that effect.
Please advise what engine is in the car (e.g. 289 cu in 4.7L Ford Windsor V8).
Please advise what transmission is in the car (e.g. 4-speed manual).

No but i'm looking to import a family car from Nz soon.
Just download the form and fill it in.You have to get approval before the car leaves for australia.

Iv been told that they ain't to keen on letting modified cars into the country. ie full blown hotrods

Whats the car your looking to import?
I found this site has sum good info in importing

Its very straight forward you just apply for import approval and state the facts... Ie engine number VIN etc...

Modified engines or another mods wont be an issue until you apply to get it registered in your particular state here is Australia... On top of the import fees you will have to pay GST here in Australia on the total sale price in NZ (or the country you purchased the car from)

Its very straight forward and the only other thing I would suggest is looking at import insurance for your particular vehicle in case of damage or theft through out the process of pick up and finally delivery!

I imported a Mazda from NZ approx 12 months ago

I had no drama's when i brought my stocker RX3 wagon in from Canada, as said earlier, biggest issue is to make sure you have the approval before it ships otherwise it could turn ugly and expensive.
The biggest issue you will face here is having it cleared through quarantine, i was given the heads-up on this so i contacted the seller a few times stressing that the car needs to be clean, free of mud/dirt, grass and/or seeds etc etc.
So anyway i asked for the option of being there when the container seal is broken, they unloaded it and pushed it aside awaiting for quarantine inspection and one of the guys that worked at the shipping joint had a quick look as did i and he said he doubted it would pass, road grime etc.
So Morksmum and i grabbed a few rags off them and a bucket of water and did our best, we decided to have a lunch break and when we got back they had been and inspected it and knocked me back on dried up dead insects stuck in the radiator ](*,)
It was put on a tilt tray and sent to a place that is contracted to steam clean the cars.
So i guess if you are travelling far like i did to pick mine up you either need to make sure its spotless inside and out and underneath or just hang off and wait to get the heads-up it's passed quarantine.

Good luck with it, just remember to keep an open mind on what the shipping will cost, everyone is out to get their share in this industry and i was warned on whatever i was quoted to allow a fair bit more and they were right

The worst part is the 10% gst. As the car i'm importing was given to me by family It has to be valued once it get's to Australia.
So who knows how much ill end up paying.

Mo's who did you use to ship your car?
Iv goten a few quotes for around the 3g mark.

I think you only have to supply one photo of the car So i'm sure you could get away with not listing the mods on the car.

Na I didn't import that white R100... It did come to Oz though...

Ill dig up who I used when I can as I think there details are on my old lap top

Be as honest as possible on the application and you will have minimal issues... Bolt on mods are worth mentioning... (check for yourself though)... They are after any structural modifications in that it may not potentially comply with Aussie standards...

GST and also cleaning procedures once it enters the country are costs that can accumulate very quickly

As Mo said things soon add up, i still have my receipt somewhere, the list of charges once it got here goes on and on and the dollars add up :)
Ok just checked, i was "quoted" just under 6K from Vancouver, came over in it's own 20ft container, just remember that's sea freight only though, i was thinking to myself if i get out of this for 8K i will be happy, ended up handing over just under $8,700.
The trip to get cleaned cost $270 on its own.
Quotes of 3K  Good luck if you can swing that, usually in the budget deals they pack anything and everything in there to maximize their available space and i did'nt want to risk that so yes i payed a premium price for peace of mind.

I did this a bit over a year ago. My car was approved, no problems.

Took a few weeks for the approval though, not a quick process.
