I have two RX2/Capella hubs that I want to convert to wheel studs for obvious reasons.

Guys I work with are happy to press them in etc, but they've left it up to me to buy them.

I was thinking/have seen on the web people using ARP wheel studs and then tightening them up so that the splined part (Knurls) under the head of the stud gets pulled into the threaded hole of the hub. (or they might drill the threads out slightly so that the knurled part has a better interference fit).

Q: What ARP studs should I get from here, I know the thread is M12 x 1.5 but is there anything else I'm meant to know before I order?

We use this style, just screw them in with a bit of loctite, good to go
you can buy them in two different lengths too depending on your needs

I'm more concerned about them snapping clean off. I don't let tyre shop gronks anywhere near my cars, especially with their uggah duggah tool. :evil:

I've used those screw in type before and wouldn't use them again if I had the choice.

Did they work? Yep. Did I lose a wheel? Nope. But even with the red Loctite thread locker, they would inevitably come loose every couple of times you remove the wheels.
The idea of them just doesn't sit well with me and press in studs are, in my humblest of opinions, a far more safe and robust route to take. Especially on an rx2, where you do have good access to the backs of the hubs, unlike an s1/2 rx7.

I had a set of those screw in studs on my old 1300 coupe when I got it, but they were screwed into the nuts, effectively turning mag wheel nuts into mag wheel bolts.

I took them out of the nuts and screwed them into the hubs and axles, but still not a huge fan as they did come loose.

Also, in another 1300 that had damaged wheel bolt threads from one too many loose wheels, I drilled out the threads in the axle, and knocked in some wheel studs from a Gemini.I can't remember iof I actually used that axle, I think I swapped a good wheel bolt axle into the car and used the modified axle to keep a parts car rolling, but it seemed to work pretty good, the studs were snug and seemed to have enough length.

Just make sure the studs you get are long enough without being too long, and drill the hole out to correct size.

I was planning to screw the arp studs in just enough so that the knurl catches on the thread, then keep tightening it up so that the knurl is an interference fit on the threaded bolt hole.

RX7_Ben - how did you sort out your RX2?

The other idea I had was to get hi tensile M12x1.5 bolts, thread them through from the back and then just tack weld the bolt in place so that it never comes loose and if I ever break a stud, I can just cut the weld and undo the bolt.

Have also thought about using HT bolts from the back, but front hubs (either way) will need to make sure the back side of the stud holes is flat, possibly even get it machined.

As for securing them, tack welding could affect the heat treating and strength in both the bolt and the axle/hub, I would be looking at using locking washers of some kind and possibly loctite to keep them from backing out.

I just used NICE brand studs, drilled the threads out and pressed in the new ones.

Did you keep the same thread pitch on the new studs Ben? M12 x 1.5?

Pretty sure I may end up doing the same thing. I have an unknown diff as well that has been sitting. If the rear wheel bearings are toast, I'll definitely be converting the rear axles to press in studs as well.
