I've got this 1982 RX7 arriving soon and envisage I will be doing some paint and panel work.

What is the original paint type? Acrylic or enamel or other?

If it's a solid white, it will be 2K.

If it's a Pearl white, with a metallic fleck in the paint, it will be base coat/clear coat.

If it's still got the original data plate with paint code on it, your painter will be able to get the correct formula from his paint software.

I was under the impression that all 1st gen rx7s were acrylic, with the metallic colours being clear over base.

That white will likely be WT Formula White. But for Australian delivered cars from series 2 on the 2 digit colour code should be stamped on the chassis plate. You can verify when gou take delivery of the car.

It would be acrylic, easy to tell, simply get a rag with some lacquer thinners and wipe a small section inside a door or somewhere in noticeable, if it softens then it's acrylic, if it don't then it's 2k, but being that old I doubt it would be unless it's been resprayed, the paint shop will know if you ask them, but if your doing a respray, don't mess with acrylic, just use 2k system, better results and easier to use
