Hi,
As my car (13B N/A 1970 MG Midget) has had the heater / fan unit removed, I need to come up with a small, behind the dash solution to get through inspection when changing from Vic to NSW rego.

The original demister toggle switch is still on the dash, just need to come up with a small 12v hair dryer type of arrangement to hook into existing ducting.

If installed in a somewhat professional working manner, I am guessing this will comply.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what / where I can obtain one?

Surely kit cars and hot rods come up with the same need?

Any ideas?

You can get a 12v hair dryer off ebay for about $30. I don't know if it will be acceptable in their eyes though.

Thanks Ben, figured it would not look like a hair dryer by the time it was modified and fitted. Surely if it turns on, makes noise and pumps hot air through the windscreen vents an inspector would not look further???
I really want to avoid installing a "plumbed" heater core arrangement.

I can comfirm that it works in SA. The outdoor camping place I got it from says its the only reason they stock them is for Hot rods, RTA where well aware and fine with it.
I just got creative with the standard vents and some cheap plastic tubing.

It even works, I was driving mine in the pouring rain the other day and both the demister and water sprayers I had to hook up for legal rego helped me see, amazing isnt it!!

The eBay hairdryer worked for my mate getting his AE86 passed in NSW...they didn't care what the air was coming from, just that it was there. He simply rigged it up to a toggle switch on the dash and used the air duct pipes from supercheap auto to direct air to the factory dashtop vents. Hairdryer was held up against firewall with p-clamps...

I asked all the camping stores around here thinking they would all have something readily available, they all looked at me like I was from another planet.
I ended up getting one from ebay when I did mine.

Alternatively, you can get a heated front windscreen which will do the job perfectly. The elements are so fine it is virtually impossible to se them and they work great.

A 12v hair dryer is perfectly ok.

All it has to do is blow warm air on the windscreen, no one cares how it gets there or where it comes from just as long as it gets there.

I got my hair dryer from the camp store and was told they only keep them for hotrodders.
It made me think who else would buy a 12v hair dryer, I thought if I had a missus who couldnt go camping without a hair dryer then she would be too special for me. :)

Thanks guys,
Does anyone know if the demister set up needs to be 2 stage (LOW / HIGH / OFF) or will an ON / OFF pass in NSW?

A few years ago I constructed an elec demister and used a compact Escort type under dash heater but installed 12v caravan heater elements and it worked fine.

Think I have solved my problem.

I have been advised that air flow is sufficient - does not need to be heated air. I have purchased a Rule Bilge Blower commonly used in boats to expel fumes prior to starting inboard engines.

The unit only cost $45 and is 3" tube, approx 110mm long. A reducer clamps on and problem solved. This unit is very compact and designed for this purpose.

I personally do not like the idea and bodgy set up when converting a 12v hair dryer for the purpose.
