what ever happened to good judgement?

well that's what im asking what do people use these days just center it up

Yeah, you usually find good judgment works - broomstick handle, etc.
I usually just get it tight enough to not move, but still be able to move it around with fingers.
Can then usually get a good feel for it lining up around the edge, if you know what i mean.

Did you end up getting your engine in ?
If puting all the shit on it while out of car, (or even in car) can do as above then
slide your box in, carefully pull it out, then tighten it all up if want to be certain the first time.
Just make sure its fairly tight, but loose enough to move around with a little oomph.

Long bolt with sticky tape wrapped around shaft as many times as required to get the required thickeness....

just used some 19mm dowel all sweet

Direct clutch sells them, a plastic replica of your input shaft, nothing worse then lifting in the box and having dramas with it not sliding straight in.

For how cheap they are I don't know how you could go without one
